The All-New 2020 Porsche Carrera 911 992
The 992 Generation of the Porsche 911 is Upon Us
Code-named the 992, the new 911 is faster, safer, and sleeker than ever before.
The 2020 Porsche 911 Carrera has finally been revealed. Code-named the 992, this is the eighth new version of the Porsche 911 in the car’s 55-year history. It made its debut in the Carrera 4S model at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
The new generation of engines is more powerful and even more efficient. The new 8-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) puts forward thrust on the road even more effectively. The newly designed Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) increases sporty performance and comfort. Driver assistance systems, such as Lane Keeping Assist including traffic sign recognition and Night Vision Assist, make driving easier.
The new 911 is the sum of the best from previous models – and is therefore a reflection of the past with a vision for the future. The silhouette: iconic. The design: timeless. The technology: inspired by great racing victories and always one step ahead. With the eighth generation of the 911, Porsche is driving into the future.
In keeping with the great 911 tradition, the 992 has a very familiar look to its predecessor, the 991. Porsche has opted for evolution, not revolution, with this update. The basic underlying structure and 96.5-inch wheelbase of the 991 has been brought over, but the 992 sports new bodywork and brings a number of important suspension changes. Additionally, the body is made entirely from aluminum except for the front and rear fascias.
The door handles are sleek and flush with the bodywork and only extend out when pressed, while the squared off front hood is meant to recall the early air-cooled 911 models. The 992 boasts a wider, electronically adjustable rear spoiler, and the body-length rear light bar, which was previously reserved for Carrera 4 models only, will now appear on every new 911.
Just like all 911 renditions of the past, the 2020 911 has a flat-six mounted behind the rear axle. Its the same twin-turbo 3.0-liter used in current Carrera models, but with revisions to the turbo and fuel-injection systems, it now sports 443 horsepower in the Carrera S models, up 23 from the previous build. With the new standard 8-speed Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK), the power of the engine is transferred even more efficiently to the road. And the driving pleasure is enhanced. PDK allows extremely fast gear changes without interrupting the flow of power – not even by a millisecond. In comparison to previous generations, the new 8-speed PDK also offers a perceptibly wider middle ground between comfort, performance and efficiency.
Inside The Cockpit
With the future comes more tech, and the 992 certainly isn’t lacking. The new Wet driving mode tunes the ABS and stability control to help maximize traction in the wet road conditions. Automatic emergency braking is now standard, with an optional night-vision camera upgrade. Inside the cockpit you’ll find Porsche’s new infotainment system brought over from Panamera models, and the gauges feature two digital screens on either side of the traditional analog tachometer in the center.
Who says you can’t have great sporty performance and great comfort? The Porsche 911 has always united both – as only the 911 can. It is also impressive with its good ergonomics and high-quality interior materials. And has many other options to individually increase comfort and sporty performance.
The Sport Seats Plus, available on request, offer even better lateral support for dynamic driving. The two-zone automatic climate control creates a pleasant atmosphere in any driving situation. The new optional ionizer improves the air quality in the interior.
